Sleepless in the Saddle 2011

August 15th, 2011 by amy No comments »

After racing this solo last year I decided to enter it again, I didn’t feel as fit and this year I seem to have been ill a lot, but I remembered enjoying it. Somehow I seem to have forgotten all about the pain! Once again we travelled down on the friday afternoon after collecting my bike and the gazebo from the shop, thanks guys. We got a good spot and set everything up and then headed off to my sisters so I could sleep in a bed the night before. Getting back the next morning it was a lot busier than when we had left and seemed busier than last year. It is scary how quickly time goes and I was up at the front ready to run. Once again I went backwards but I only spotted a couple of solo girls going past me. On the bike and there was a little bit of queuing into the singletrack but nothing too bad.

P1030440

Coming round from the first lap and the commentators annouched I was the first solo female, so all I had to do was hold the lead….not that easy as there was still 23hours to go. Fortunately I had a fantastic pit crew with Ali and my sister and for five laps I didn’t stop they just handed me bottles and food on the go. I was slowly building a gap. about four minutes a lap but I knew lots could happen.

Then it rained, anyone who knows Catton Park will understand what this means, horrible clay-like mud. After adding a layer I set out and ended up dragging my bike through some of the singletrack sections, back to the pits and out on the singlespeed while friends cleaned my bike. Thankfully the course had dried up again and I was back on the superfly for my next lap and the rest of the race.
During the night I slowed down but kept plodding on, morning came and no falling asleep on my bike moments this year. I think that may have been some to do with which body part hurts the most game my body was playing. I was tempted to let go of the bars on downhills, but fortunately realised what a bad idea that was.

I finished about five minutes after the 24hours with 20laps, this apparently is 155miles so no wonder I was tired. I kept the top spot throughout the race and needed some help up onto the podium.

I keep saying that’s enough for 24solo’s, but apart from the pain I felt stronger this time so maybe I’ll have to do another.

Circuit Racing

July 20th, 2011 by amy No comments »

Ever since the cycle circuit opened in tameside I’ve meant to go over and have a look. They have a racing league on tuesday nights but obviously that is a bit too much for me. Then someone tweeted about a beginners women’s race and Ali decided to go, while at work I made the decision to join her. It’s only a short race so I knew I would be dropped but I thought it was maybe the only chance to ever try it.

Getting there and signing on it turned out there was eight of us in total, so not too scary. We set off and six of them left me, then one left everyone. There was a group of two behind her then three working together, I was holding the gap but not gaining. One of the three in front dropped off and I was gaining on her, then she crashed. I was now holding the gap on the two in front (one of who was Ali) but they were working together so although they weren’t getting away much I couldn’t do anything about it.

I was lapped by the girl in the lead, but not the others. In total I did 16laps of the 1km circuit. The race lasted just under 30miutes. Although I was on my own and being a wimp in the corners I enjoyed it.

There is one more on the 23rd August, all you need is a road bike. Get there for about 7:30pm and the race is 8:30pm. Anyone going to join us?

10 @ kirroughtree

Felt pretty rubbish on the bike the week before kirroughtree, my legs didnt have any speed and i was feeling very tired. This didnt bother me to much as i was entering this race for the course its self, it is one of a kind, if you ever want a good trail centre to go ride i would recommend the red route here.
The race course had parts of the fast flowing singletrack found on the red run  also linked up with natural rooty sections which when ridden fast didn’t matter how tired you were, you always had a grin on your face.
The start of the race was led out by a ambulance onto a tarmac hill climb to spread every one out ( this is so much better than doing a run to your bike), i found myself in the front group and kept a good pace, the course was a bit damp in the morning and the roots in the woods were fun to say the least but the sun shone all day and the course grew faster and faster. I was leading by lap 3 which i didnt expect, but i knew greig brown would be on my tail soon enough  as he had punctured. Greig caught me and i rode 2 laps with him at a pace i didnt think was to bad, it was at this point in the race where the sun was hot and i really should of been concentrating on drinking lots and eating but this never occurred to me as i was to busy trying to work out a plan when to try drop greig. I made my move on lap 7 and got away from him only to be caught on the next lap where i cramped at the top of a steep climb and watched him ride off into the distance. From this point onwards the dehydration hit me and i had a couple of slow laps, i set my own rhythm and just enjoyed the course while drinking lots. I came round and found some energy on lap 9 only to have a mechanical, the chain jumped off and got jammed between the cassette and the spokes. I had to use brute force to get it out and it seemed like it took forever to do. i came in from lap 9 with half and our to go down 12 minutes on 1st place, i didnt need to go back out and do another lap to finish in 2nd as i had a big gap on 3rd but forced myself out on another lap. This was a bad idea, the first 3 quarters of the lap went well but i had a major bonk that hit me like never before i actually fell off on a smooth part of the trail, i had to ride the last 2km in 1st gear with my head nearly resting on the handle bars it took me forever to get back. Still i finshed in 2nd which is better than i expected and enjoyed it all apart from the last 2 km.Well done to grieg  who got the better of me again we were 1st and 2nd at 10 under the ben.
Damian also came in tired but with a excellent 3rd position in senior vets completing 7 laps, Mick also rode a good race with 8 laps, he managed a respectable 11th place.
Big thank you to liz for looking after me through the race, making and passing me drinks as i past by.

Mountain Mayhem

P1030249

We headed to Eastnor Castle with a team of four looing to fight for a podium spot in the sport mixed category. By the time I got there we were a rider down and the next morning found us riding in the Expert Mixed category (as you only needed four riders for that category). None of us (myself, Shaun, Chris or Dave) particularly race cross country and definitely not at that level. Still we were going to do our best.

Shaun took the first lap and hence the run, which turned out to be a lot longer than expected. Handing over we were about 10 minutes down on the Hope and Scott boys but not in last place. My lap came round fast, the lads all managing sub hour laps on the bike, and I found the course hard. Very hilly and my time off the bike shows as I was struggling a lot on the downhills. Still I don’t think I could have pushed harder.

During the night we were having a close fight with the Salsa Racing Team and Colombia-Bikefood-Pronghorn Racing for 6th/7th/8th place. We battled hard but the boys were spent and I was sent out on the last lap. I pushed as hard as I could, but I was never going to do a sub hour lap.

Still 8th in the Expert Mixed and 22nd overall was a sucessful Mayhem. The question is do we go back next year and try and have enough to actually race in the Sport Mixed category?

10 Under the ben, Fort William

Driving up through extremely hard rain shower with the wiper blades on as fast as possible wasnt really the weather me and damian were hoping for, we had faith that come saturday the sun would be out and all would be fine. We set up our tents inbetween showers next to the trail and set off to registration, free food and whisky tasting was also on the menu for competitors at the top station off the gondola which meant that was us sorted for the evening. It was blowing a gale outside and also snowing, i was wondering if i had enough warm riding kit with me to ride in winter conditions, i dont think anyone was expecting snow and hail a week before June but as they say this is scotland!

Awaking the next morning after a few pints, one to many shots of whisky and a bowl of sweet chicken thia noodles i felt pretty dehydrated (i can however recommend Benromach origins batch no2 as a top notch whisky). Damian was up and dressed and i just lay in bed listening to rain hammer off the tent. Finally the rain stopped i got up, changed and got everything sorted for the race.
The start of the race at 9.30 came round quick and i found myself on the start line still dehydrated, the weather wasnt looking to bad as we set off, sure enough though after the first lap the heavens opened and the rain started, all i can say from this point on about the weather is it just got worse.
The course was amazing it had everything a course should have, fireroad climbs, nice fast singletrack, technical rocky decents, rooty sections, stream crossings, crazy out of control muddy parts, i enjoyed it. I was riding at a comfy pace through the race but come lap 8 the weather had got me down a bit, i was feeling strong but just couldnt ride fast i was cold and wet threw, the rain was coming down hard and i just wanted to give up and crawl into my tent, something stopped me from doing that and i plodded on. I didnt have a clue where i was in the race as both me and Damian were solo on our own. I finished my 11th and final lap at 9 hours 55mins i could of gone out and done another lap but i really couldnt face it.
Turns out i came 2nd, so i was over the moon with that and to make things better Damian got a 3rd place in his category, Another 2 podium places for team cooksons.
I had ridden 102 miles with over 11000 feet of climbing.

Guided Rides

May 20th, 2011 by amy No comments »

The third Wednesday of the month saw another Guided Ride from the shop. Eight of us met for a 7pm start and headed out on the trails of Prestwich and over to Salford. After raining all day Shaun had sorted the weather and it turned out to be a nice evening, although the trails were a little muddy.

Join us for the next ride on the 1st June.

Etape du Dales

May 17th, 2011 by Chris No comments »

Met up with shaun and jason near Grassington for the start of the etape du dales sportive, 110 mile loop round the dales with plenty of hills involved. The plan was to ride round together and enjoy the ride hopefully still getting a reasonable time. We set off around 8.30ish into a headwind which was to stick in our faces for what seemed like the whole ride, add in 4 or 5 hours of rain and you’ve got a climb up to the Tan hill inn that you’ll never forget. All was going well when we managed to lose Jason on a decent, he got a puncture and me and shaun being horrid people left him to defend for himself.
We carried on over a few more climbs, our legs were feeling it and we were both struggling,  up in the hills it was pretty grim with mist wind and rain trying to make the ride a misery, we were both prepared for the weather with our clothing so it didn’t bother us to much.
There were 4 feed stations on the way round which were fully prepared with energy gels, food, water and sis energy drinks. We stopped at the last one so i could get a flapjack and pulled our selfs up the last climb. We had 30 minutes to do the last 10 miles if we were to get inside the 7 hour gold time limit. Out of nowhere i managed to get my second wind and managed to drag a group of us at over 25 mph for the whole 10 miles to the end, finishing under 7 hours at 6 hours 55.
Excellent route and would love to do it again in nicer conditions. Jason came in half an hour after us which was excellent considering he came 4th in a 24 hour race 7 days before.

Fred Whitton

May 9th, 2011 by Shaun 3 comments »

Ever fancy an easy ride in the lakes?! Have a go at the Fred Whitton Sportive – 112 miles of all the big passes in the lakes and at the 100 mile mark you go up one of the steepest climbs in the country: Hardknott Pass (1 in 3!).

Chris and I rode the route last year on standard double 39/53T chainsets – I cramped up at the 1 in 3  section of Hardknott Pass  and a nice photographer took some pictures of me on the floor in agony (and in full team kit!). I had to have another go otherwise I would never hear the end of it from Chris…

We set off on yesterday’s ride with some fast riders (it’s not supposed to be a race!) – I only just about managed to hang onto the group up Kirkstone Pass and by the time we got to Honistor Pass, we were doing an average of 20mph which was way too much for me! There was no way I could keep up with them going up Honistor – they were a lot stronger than me on the climbs and they broke away. Good job really as I could feel cramp coming on which I think was from a combination of pushing hard and the cold rain that was bouncing off my legs. I rode the last 65 miles or so on my own – took it easy on the hills and hammered it on the flats, trying to save my legs for Hardknott Pass. Got to Hardknott and I only just made it up to the steep bit, though somehow I managed to push the pedals round and ride to the top without stopping – not very elegant with a cadence of 35 RPM! I had pains in my legs which I’ve never had before which I’ve still got today!

All in all, it was a great challenge, I cleared all the hills and with a finishing time of 6:39 I managed to knock 20 mins off last year’s time. If I do it again I’ll make sure my lowest gear isn’t 39/23!

final times are here, http://www.fredwhittonchallenge.org.uk/results.php – I managed 27th quickest time of the day.

12solo

May 8th, 2011 by amy No comments »

For various reasons I headed up north to Newcastleton to ride the 12hour solo and not the 24hour. I wasn’t even thinking I was going to be competitive but was treating it as a training ride. We got there on saturday morning and promised rain hadn’t arrived, in fact it was sunny! This meant I started the race in shorts and a jersey. The first lap went okay and I was enjoying it. Lap 2 and I settled into my pace. The first half of the lap had a lot of climbing but the lap also had some lovely singletrack. After four laps Ali told me I was in third position. A nice suprise but I had no idea where fourth was. All I could do was keep going. You have to completed all the laps by midnight so I knew that I was only going to get eight laps in. I finished with 20minutes to spare just as the rain started coming down, turns out the 12hour was a good idea.

I finished in third which I was over the moon about. It was the UK and European Champs as well.

So now I need to get in training for Mayhem.
