Etape du Dales

May 17th, 2011 by Chris No comments »

Met up with shaun and jason near Grassington for the start of the etape du dales sportive, 110 mile loop round the dales with plenty of hills involved. The plan was to ride round together and enjoy the ride hopefully still getting a reasonable time. We set off around 8.30ish into a headwind which was to stick in our faces for what seemed like the whole ride, add in 4 or 5 hours of rain and you’ve got a climb up to the Tan hill inn that you’ll never forget. All was going well when we managed to lose Jason on a decent, he got a puncture and me and shaun being horrid people left him to defend for himself.
We carried on over a few more climbs, our legs were feeling it and we were both struggling,  up in the hills it was pretty grim with mist wind and rain trying to make the ride a misery, we were both prepared for the weather with our clothing so it didn’t bother us to much.
There were 4 feed stations on the way round which were fully prepared with energy gels, food, water and sis energy drinks. We stopped at the last one so i could get a flapjack and pulled our selfs up the last climb. We had 30 minutes to do the last 10 miles if we were to get inside the 7 hour gold time limit. Out of nowhere i managed to get my second wind and managed to drag a group of us at over 25 mph for the whole 10 miles to the end, finishing under 7 hours at 6 hours 55.
Excellent route and would love to do it again in nicer conditions. Jason came in half an hour after us which was excellent considering he came 4th in a 24 hour race 7 days before.

Fred Whitton

Ever fancy an easy ride in the lakes?! Have a go at the Fred Whitton Sportive – 112 miles of all the big passes in the lakes and at the 100 mile mark you go up one of the steepest climbs in the country: Hardknott Pass (1 in 3!).

Chris and I rode the route last year on standard double 39/53T chainsets – I cramped up at the 1 in 3  section of Hardknott Pass  and a nice photographer took some pictures of me on the floor in agony (and in full team kit!). I had to have another go otherwise I would never hear the end of it from Chris…

We set off on yesterday’s ride with some fast riders (it’s not supposed to be a race!) – I only just about managed to hang onto the group up Kirkstone Pass and by the time we got to Honistor Pass, we were doing an average of 20mph which was way too much for me! There was no way I could keep up with them going up Honistor – they were a lot stronger than me on the climbs and they broke away. Good job really as I could feel cramp coming on which I think was from a combination of pushing hard and the cold rain that was bouncing off my legs. I rode the last 65 miles or so on my own – took it easy on the hills and hammered it on the flats, trying to save my legs for Hardknott Pass. Got to Hardknott and I only just made it up to the steep bit, though somehow I managed to push the pedals round and ride to the top without stopping – not very elegant with a cadence of 35 RPM! I had pains in my legs which I’ve never had before which I’ve still got today!

All in all, it was a great challenge, I cleared all the hills and with a finishing time of 6:39 I managed to knock 20 mins off last year’s time. If I do it again I’ll make sure my lowest gear isn’t 39/23!

final times are here, http://www.fredwhittonchallenge.org.uk/results.php – I managed 27th quickest time of the day.

12solo

For various reasons I headed up north to Newcastleton to ride the 12hour solo and not the 24hour. I wasn’t even thinking I was going to be competitive but was treating it as a training ride. We got there on saturday morning and promised rain hadn’t arrived, in fact it was sunny! This meant I started the race in shorts and a jersey. The first lap went okay and I was enjoying it. Lap 2 and I settled into my pace. The first half of the lap had a lot of climbing but the lap also had some lovely singletrack. After four laps Ali told me I was in third position. A nice suprise but I had no idea where fourth was. All I could do was keep going. You have to completed all the laps by midnight so I knew that I was only going to get eight laps in. I finished with 20minutes to spare just as the rain started coming down, turns out the 12hour was a good idea.

I finished in third which I was over the moon about. It was the UK and European Champs as well.

So now I need to get in training for Mayhem.

Enduro 6

Arrived at Catton park saturday afternoon and set up in a cloudless sunny but very windy conditions, got the bbq on and ate as much meat as i could (not the best pre race food but it cant be beaten in the sun) followed by a couple of beers as we watched the night time trail start with the sun setting.

We finished the evening with a hot chocolate in the food tent and headed to bed at a reasonable 10.30pm. I had a good sleep and woke up at 8 am feeling nice and fresh. Cooked myself some porridge and got all my stuff together in my pit. The start of the race came quick and i was dreading the 800 meter run. i never run and cant stand running, I can cope with a 50 meter dash but 800 meters is just to much. Im pretty sure i came into my pits right at the back even though i started on the front line. The first lap was spent getting stuck behind people and sprinting as hard as i could on the open parts of the course (which there wasnt much of). I’d chosen to ride with bottles as i didnt want to haul a heavy camelbak round, i think this might of been a bad idea as there wasnt much time on the course to drink out of a bottle and also you lost a minute each time you came into the pits to swap bottles. In the 6 hours i raced i only managed to have 4 bottles and i was really dehydrated at the end.

I had caught Shaun up in the race and over took him but i didnt have a clue what place i was in, I thought i was in the top 5, it wasnt till the end after the finish i was told i had won. I never expected to and was well suprised and happy. Not only that but Shaun had came in a few mins behind me in 2nd. 2 Cookson boys on the podium at the same time!

Spring into the dales audax

April 17th, 2011 by Chris 1 comment »

Up early in the morning to ride to hebden bridge via the bacup climb for 8.30am to sign on to the spring into the dales audax. Paid the 4 quid entry fee and had a brew, didnt have a clue about the route even though i did it last year, so just tried to work out who the fast people were and i’d stick to them. It set off at a easy pace and i found myself in the leading group. On the first decent my gps decided to fly off my handlebars so i stopped and went back and spent the next 10 mins catching everyone back up. The ride was ace on quiet roads through the dales passing through appletree wick and bolton abbey. I felt good all the way through the ride and completed it in 4 hours 17 mins.  After eating pizza, pork pies and cake back at the finish i set off back home via cragg vale putting my mileage upto 120 with over 8000 feet of climbing. You cant beat audax’s there top fun.

Cheshire Cat 100 Mile

March 27th, 2011 by Shaun 1 comment »

Rode the Cheshire Cat today, great day to be out even though it was a bit cold in the morning. We had lots of riders flying the flag on all three routes today (47, 69 and 100 mile) – Chris finished strong pulling 10 riders the last 10 miles more or less on his own. a few of us won’t have any official times because we were freezing to death in the queue at the start so set off without being checked out.

here is the 100 mile route from my GPS.

Whinlatter Challenge

March 23rd, 2011 by amy No comments »

So on Sunday I headed up with Shaun and Chris to Whinlatter for the enduro event being held there after some gentle persuasion from Chris. I’d had a good week of commuting but work was cancelled on Saturday so I was able to rest my legs. Not too early on Sunday the van turned up and we headed up the M6 into the mist and drizzle, this wasn’t the weather I had been promised! Still when you are basically racing you don’t notice the weather too much, or so I told myself! Getting there and it seemed to have stopped raining and walking to and from registration it even seemed warm. I made the decision then to ride in Jersey, Shorts, knee warmers and arm warmers and hoped I wouldn’t regret taking my base layer off.

Soon we were heading up to the start and trying to get a little closer to the start, nearly 400people meant this wasn’t easy. The next thing is we’re off. Chris and I put our heads down to move up as much as possible in the fireroad, I soon lost sight of him and Shaun soon came past me as well. Into the first singletrack and it was walking pace, still nice to catch my breath after the initial sprint!

The drizzle was soon back and the course seemed to be steep fireroad climbs followed by rocky slippy singletrack descents. I took a while to feel like I could descent, at first I must have looked like I hadn’t ridden a bike before. But soon I even managed to find some flow, before missing a corner and leaving the track for a while. Round the first lap and out onto the second, it was temping to go right for the finish with the wind and rain not being particularly pleasant. But I’d come all that way I had to do the 31miles. In the second loop I was catching some people up which always helps with motivation and was actually sad when I finished.

The course was pretty tough with 1000m of climbing. But great fun. I’d definitely head up again next year.

I finished in 3:30 which put me 4th female, the boys stormed round in 2:42 (finishing only 40seconds apart) to finish 14th and 15th.
