E-bikes are a brilliant way to ride further, commute more easily and enjoy cycling more often. At Cookson Cycles, we support safe, reliable and legal e-bikes — which is why our workshop follows clear rules on what we can and cannot service.
This page explains the types of e-bikes we work on, the motor systems we support, and why we do not fit conversion kits, tuning devices or non-compliant batteries.
In Great Britain, most legal e-bikes are classed as Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles, often shortened to EAPCs. A compliant EAPC can usually be used in the same way as a normal bicycle, provided the rider is aged 14 or over.

If an e-bike does not meet these requirements, it may be treated as a motor vehicle rather than a bicycle. This can affect where it can be used, whether it needs registration, insurance, tax, type approval and a suitable licence.
We service and maintain factory-built, UK-compliant e-bikes from recognised manufacturers, such as Amflow, Trek, Scott and more. These are bikes designed, tested and supplied as complete e-bikes, rather than bicycles converted later with aftermarket motor kits.

We can mechanically service many e-bikes fitted with Shimano, Mahle and Specialized systems, including brakes, gears, tyres, suspension, wheels and general servicing. However, electrical diagnostics, firmware updates and motor system support may be limited on these systems.
For safety, insurance and compliance reasons, we do not work on:
We understand why conversion kits can look appealing, but they can create problems around safety, compatibility, braking performance, battery quality, wiring, frame suitability and long-term reliability.
Once a standard bicycle is converted into an e-bike, responsibility for the safety and compliance of that finished vehicle becomes much more complicated. For that reason, our workshop does not supply, install or repair aftermarket e-bike conversion kits.
We do not install tuning chips, dongles or software modifications designed to increase the assisted speed or power of an e-bike beyond UK EAPC limits.
De-restricting an e-bike can affect its legal status, warranty, insurance position and safety. It can also place extra strain on the motor, battery, drivetrain, brakes, wheels and frame.
Our workshop only supports e-bikes that remain road-legal and operate in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
E-bike batteries and chargers must be safe, compatible and suitable for the bike they are used with. We do not supply or fit uncertified batteries, chargers or electrical components.
Where replacement batteries, chargers or electrical parts are required, we will only use suitable parts from trusted suppliers and recognised manufacturers.
Our aim is to keep riders safe, protect warranties where possible and support the future of responsible e-bike use. We reserve the right to refuse work on any e-bike we believe to be unsafe, non-compliant, modified or unsuitable for repair.
